Support troops with care packages

Blue Star Mothers of America, Washington State Chapter No. 1, wants to express love and support for troops overseas and for wounded service members whose families stay at Fisher House in Tacoma.

Make a donation for care packages or for Fisher House from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at Haggen Food and Pharmacy, 8915 Market Place NE, Lake Stevens.

Firefighters and police officers will drop by and leave T-shirts to send to soldiers.

Elks sponsors anti-drug contests

Everett Elks Lodge No. 479 sponsors essay and poster contests with the theme “Drugs? Don’t Get Me Started!” Prizes are $50 savings bonds.

The essay contest is for kids in fifth through eighth grades. Essays, up to 500 words, will be judged on originality, thoughtfulness, grammar, appearance and message.

The poster contest is for kids in third through sixth grades. Maximum poster size is 81/2 by 11 inches. Do not use copyrighted images. Posters will be judged on originality, neatness and grammar.

Entries are due by Tuesday to Everett Elks 479, P.O. Box 13227, Everett, WA 98206-3227. Include the contestant’s name, parent’s name, address, phone number, school, teacher’s name and grade level.

Kick-a-Thon in Mukilteo, Monroe

Mukilteo and Monroe YMCA karate programs plan to help the YMCA’s Invest in Youth campaign by holding a Kick-a-Thon at noon Saturday in Mukilteo and at 6 p.m. Tuesday in Monroe.

Karate students will see just how many kicks they each can do. Each student is looking for sponsors to generate donations for the Invest in Youth campaign.

In the karate program, self-discipline rather than aggressiveness is promoted.

The Washington State Bar Association offers a hotline for low-income folks who need legal help to recover from flood damage.

Those who can’t afford their own lawyer can get free legal advice from volunteer WSBA attorneys by calling 866-519-7099.
