Practice English skills at library
Adults who are learning to speak English as a second language can practice their skills at an event planned for the Mukilteo Library.
The event is scheduled for 7 p.m. Sunday at the library at 4675 Harbour Pointe Blvd.
The event is being repeated at 7 p.m. Jan. 14 and Jan. 28.
Volunteers with the Snohomish County Literacy Coalition are expected to be on hand to assist people during the event.

Operation Lookout needs office help
Operation Lookout and the Foundation for Missing Children, based in Everett, is looking for volunteers to help with an eBay project and work the office.

Stores accepting cash for food banks
Through Friday, Cost Cutter and Food Pavilion stores in Snohomish County plan to offer customers and employees the opportunity to donate $1 to $5 at checkstands to benefit local food banks, including Salt of the Earth Food Bank in Lake Stevens and the Arlington Food Bank.
Customers can find the donation materials at the Everett Cost Cutter and Arlington Food Pavilion stores.
Sign up for police Citizens Academy
People who want to learn the ins and outs of the Lynnwood Police Department can sign up for the department’s 18th annual Citizens Academy.
Citizens Academy is scheduled from 7 to 10 p.m. Thursdays starting Jan. 10 and ending April 24. Classes are at the Civic Justice Center at 19321 44th Ave. W.
The free 16-week academy is planned to cover all phases of law enforcement. Planned activities include investigating mock crime scenes, learning about weapons carried by officers, seeing an emergency dispatch center and learning personal safety tips.
