Ferries shifting to winter schedule
Washington state ferries shift to winter hours Sunday, and the schedule continues through March 29.
The winter season is traditionally a slow season for the ferry system, so seasonal cuts or changes in service are made to save money. This is the fifth year in a row for these seasonal cuts, which save about $500,000 each winter season.
During the winter, service between Anacortes and Sidney, B.C., is canceled, and the international vessel goes through its annual maintenance period and runs domestic service.
Anacortes and San Juan Island routes experience the most changes. The regular four boats will run in the San Juan Islands on Monday through Friday, and three boats will run on weekends, creating weekday and weekend schedules.
The winter schedule is available at all ferry terminals as well as local libraries and at www.wsdot.wa.gov/ferries.
