Stay off ice on lakes and ponds
Marysville Fire District urges everyone to stay off ice on bodies of water.
What appears to be solid ice might look inviting, but it could be deadly. Stay off the ice on lakes, rivers and retention ponds, even if it looks like it will hold you.
If you see someone fall through the ice:
@1. Body FYI Bullet:Keep calm.
Call 911 immediately.
Find something on the shore to throw to the victim that you can use to pull the victim out of the water.
Do not run up to the hole. You could break though the ice, too, making two victims to rescue.
Memory aid: throw, pull, but don’t go.
What if you fall through the ice?
@1. Body FYI Bullet:Keep calm and look toward the shore.
Place your hands and arms on the unbroken surface of the ice.
Work forward on the ice by kicking your feet; this will help keep your body horizontal and help you “swim” out of the hole in the ice.
If the ice breaks, maintain your position and slide forward again. If this does not work, keep trying.
Once you are lying on the ice, don’t stand. Instead, roll away from the hole.
Crawl back to your tracks, making sure that the hole remains a safe distance behind you. This will spread out your weight until you are on solid ice.
Follow your footsteps back to shore.
Seek medical care and call 911 immediately.
What if your pet has fallen through the ice?
@1. Body FYI Bullet:Whatever you do, do not go onto the ice. If an animal has fallen through the ice, then you will, too.
Notify the authorities (911, fire or police department).
Rescuers have tools and rescue gear that they can use and not endanger human lives doing it.
