Denim Day aims to stop abuse
To mark National Domestic Violence month, the Snohomish County Center for Battered Women plans its second annual Hope Within Luncheon for noon Wednesday at Comcast Arena at Everett Events Center. The theme for this year’s luncheon is Denim Day.
Snohomish County Executive Aaron Reardon proclaimed Wednesday as Snohomish County Denim Day. Denim Day was started as a protest by the women of the Italian Parliament in 1999 as a response to an Italian Supreme Court ruling that overturned a rape conviction by stating “that jeans cannot even be partly removed without the effective help of the person wearing them … and it is impossible if the victim is struggling with all her might.”

Correction
Tom Peterson, the state Department of Transportation’s aviation emergency service coordinator, leads efforts to find downed planes but does not investigate crash causes. That task is performed by the federal National Transportation Safety Board. A headline over a story on Page A1 Thursday was incorrect.
