Western Washington University senior Emily Przybelinski from Everett helped design, build and manufacture Drekar, a human- powered submarine that set a new team record for speed at the recent International Submarine Races in Bethesda, Md.
Drekar finished as the top West Coast submarine and reached a high speed of 4.78 knots. It placed third in its class, sixth overall and won honorable-mention awards for best use of composites and overall design.
More than 25 teams competed in the event.
College needs volunteer readers
The Everett Community College Literacy Center needs volunteers who can give two or more hours a week to help adults improve reading, writing, English speaking and basic math skills.
Helpers must be older than 18 and possess literacy skills, patience and sensitivity to a variety of learning styles and diversity.
Work hours can be flexible.

Crew visits from “Deadliest Catch”
Ragnhild Moncrief, the only woman featured on the Discovery Channel’s “Deadliest Catch” series, will talk about her adventures on a crabbing boat from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at Snohomish TOP Food &Drug, 1301 Ave. D.
This was Moncrief’s second king crab season and first opilio crab season in the Bering Sea off the Alaska coast.
