Tips for staying safe at barbecues
The weather should be nice for at least the first part of the weekend. If you’re planning a barbecue, keep these tips in mind:
State Fire Marshal Mike Matlick warns against overfilling the propane tank. Always store tanks outside, in well-ventilated areas, and:
@1. Body FYI Bullet:Keep the barbecue five to 10 feet away from your house and any other flammable items or structures.
Never barbecue in enclosed areas; you risk carbon-monoxide poisoning.
Keep kids and pets away from barbecues.
Stay with your fire at all times and keep a bucket of water nearby.
Don’t wear loose clothing while cooking at a barbecue and tie long hair back.
Don’t add fluid to hot coals. The flame can flash up into the container and explode.
Dispose of hot coals properly.

n The wrong photo of Bob Neumann, United Way of Snohomish County’s Spirit of Labor award winner, appeared with a story about the annual Spirit of Snohomish County winners on Page B1 Wednesday. Here is the correct photo of Neumann, who spent the last decade of his life volunteering with rehabilitation clinic patients. He died Feb. 25.
n There is no teen night planned Saturday in Lynnwood. An incorrect date was listed in an announcement that appeared on Page B2 in Wednesday’s Community Calendar. The same incorrect date was printed in The Buzz on Page A1 Monday.
n A chart of local results on last spring’s Washington State Assessment for School Learning, which appeared on Page A13 on Aug. 31, contained errors for two schools.
At Edmonds Elementary School, 76.7 percent of students passed reading and 79.1 percent passed math in the WASL.
For third-graders at Edmonds Homeschool Resource Center, 55.6 percent passed reading and 33.3 percent passed; for fourth-graders, 66.7 percent in reading, 34.4 percent in math and 34.4 percent in writing; for fifth-graders, 65.5 percent in reading, 50 percent in math and 31 percent in writing; and for sixth-graders, 56 percent in reading and 42.3 percent in math.
