The Everett-based Coast Guard Cutter Henry Blake celebrated its seventh anniversary last week, sailing near the Dungeness Spit Lighthouse near Port Angeles.
That’s symbolic because the vessel is named after the first keeper at the lighthouse. The lighthouse lit up in 1857. It was the first active lighthouse for the Strait of Juan de Fuca.
The Blake, based at Naval Station Everett, is the 13th of the Keeper Class of coastal buoy tenders. There are 14 tenders in the class, and they have automated engineering controls and computer-based navigation and communications systems. The ship began operation in Everett in late 2000.
The crew of the Henry Blake is responsible for the maintenance of 80 lighted and 39 unlighted navigation aids from south Puget Sound to Neah Bay. It also tends 65 shore navigation aids.
In addition, the crew of the Henry Blake performs search-and-rescue operations, maritime law enforcement, and marine environmental protection missions.
