FYI

As columnist Kristi O’Harran wrote in 1990, Michal Miles started kindergarten at Presidents Elementary School in Arlington.

The emotional moment was sweetened by an old German tradition.

Miles’ grandmother, Gisela Hinchcliffe of Lake Stevens, gave her a Schultuete filled with presents before she left for her first day of school. Schultuetes, decorated paper cones filled with gifts, are given to German youngsters on their first day of school.

O’Harran again wrote about the family tradition on June 10, 2003, as Miles graduated from high school.

Saturday she graduates with honors from Columbia College, and her mother, Joan Miles, said the Schultuete will be at the party, as will her grandmother, who got her Schultuete in 1935 in Berlin.
