Marysville residents are invited to attend a reception Friday to welcome new Police Chief Rick Smith.
The event is scheduled for 2 p.m. in the Ken Baxter Senior Community Center, 514 Delta Ave. Refreshments will be available.
Smith and members of his family are expected to be on hand. Smith and his wife, Chris, have two children, a college-age son and a daughter in high school.
Smith served as a commander in the Vancouver, Wash., Police Department for several years before coming to Marysville.
Deadline is near for scholarships
The staff and friends of Hawthorne Elementary School in Everett provide scholarships to graduating seniors who attended the school.
In addition, family and friends of Carol Degan, who taught physical education at Hawthorne for 10 years, are offering a scholarship to a former Hawthorne student who plans to pursue a career in physical education or health education.
Applicants must have a financial need. Applications are available at high school counseling offices or at Hawthorne and are due by 4 p.m. Wednesday in the Hawthorne office, 1110 Poplar St., Everett.
Libraries offer talking books
Sno-Isle Libraries offer online, animated talking picture books at www.sno-isle.org/tumblebooks.
The online books are available in English, French and Spanish. It is not necessary to have a library card.
Library staff members will be out in the community demonstrating this offering and answering questions.
