Fourth-grade students may enter the Everett Elks Mother’s Day Essay Contest.
In 300 words or less, tell “Why my Mom should be Mother of the Year.”
The top boy and girl winners will be invited with their mothers to a Mother’s Day brunch at the Elks where they will read their essay and receive a gift certificate as well as flowers for their mother.
Entries are due to the Everett Lodge, attention Leah Ford, 2731 Rucker Ave., Everett, WA, 98201 by Sunday.

Lake Stevens talks violence
The Lake Stevens Family Center has planned its second annual Youth Forum on Violence at 5:30 p.m. Thursday the Lake Stevens School district Educational Service Center, 12309 22nd St. NE.
Resources for families and high school students who want to learn about dealing with violence will be available.
Admission is free.
Jim Diers, author of “Neighbor Power: Building Community the Seattle Way,” is scheduled to show Edmonds residents how to complete community projects at 7 tonight at the Unitarian Universalist Church, 8109 224th St. SW.
The free presentation intends to show examples from communities that have created parks, playgrounds and public facilities by using local volunteers and minimal taxpayers’ money.
Admission is free.
Valley General Hospital Foundation is collecting $64,000 for new birth center equipment. The new fetal-monitoring equipment will be an upgrade from the equipment that is currently in use.
