Help for families to pay for college
Although college can quickly get expensive, only one-quarter of Washington’s high school seniors last year filled out the federal college loan applications needed to obtain financial aid.
In an effort to increase the use of financial aid, Northwest Education Loan offers its College Goal Sunday event at 2 p.m. Sunday at Everett Community College, 2000 Tower St., Everett.
School advisers and loan officers will be available to help families understand and complete the Free Application for Federal Financial Student Aid, better known as the FAFSA. Students and parents should bring recent tax forms or pay stubs, the student’s Social Security number and driver’s license.

The district plans to apply for a state waiver for one day lost during the windstorms, when Gov. Chris Gregoire declared a state of emergency in Snohomish County.
If school is canceled again this winter, Feb. 20 would also be named a make-up day. Any other cancellations would be made up at the end of the school year.
Correction
Wines from Whidbey Island Winery are available at Evergreen Cellars at 1101 First St. and Top Foods at 1301 Ave. D in Snohomish. A story in the Food section in Wednesday’s Herald incorrectly listed City Deli &Wine Shop in Snohomish as a source for the wine, but the business has closed.
