The state Department of Transportation has closed the North Cascades Highway, Highway 20, five miles west of the town of Newhalem because of a slide at milepost 112. Crews are flagging local traffic between Newhalem and Diablo. The agency said it could be a few weeks before the road reopens.

Veterans Day brings changes
Saturday is Veterans Day. Here are some closures:
Government: Federal, state and most local offices will be closed Friday and Saturday.
Public schools: Closed.
Post offices: Closed, but Express Mail service continues.
Commerce: Most businesses are open, but most banks are closed.
Transportation: Buses and ferries are on regular schedules.

Free admission for veterans
U.S. veterans, members of the U.S. armed forces and their families may visit recreation sites free across public lands managed by the Department of the Interior and the Department of Agriculture on Veterans Day.
The free day will be an annual Veterans Day benefit.
