Join the Orca Network for the “Ways of Whales” workshop at 9 a.m. Jan. 28 at the Coupeville Middle School Performing Arts Center.
Josh London of the University of Washington School of Aquatic and Fishery Sciences will discuss the extended stay of the “Slippery Six” transient orcas in Hood Canal.
Dave Ellifrit of the Center for Whale Research will talk about orcas in the Bering Sea. Howard Garrett of the Orca Network will discuss the endangered species listing.
Scott Veirs of Beam Reach Marine Science and Sustainability School will talk about research on the vocal and acoustical world of the orcas, and Frances Robertson of the Northwest Pacific Minke Whale Project will profile those whales.

Ride the train to the big game
Ride the “Seahawk Special” Sounder train from Everett Station at 1 or 1:20 p.m. Sunday to the Seattle Seahawks National Football Conference championship game against the Carolina Panthers at Qwest Field.
The trains will leave Edmonds at 1:25 and 1:45 p.m., and return from Seattle soon after the game.
String quartet to play at library
The Blue Sky String Quartet – with Jane Slager and Aaron Wartes on violin, Mark Ainsworth on viola and Diane Tremaine on cello – will play at 2:30 p.m. today at the Monroe Public Library, 1070 Village Way.
This event, called the “Sounds of Music,” features classical to contemporary pieces for strings including works by Mozart in honor of his 300th birthday. The musicians also will answer questions about their instruments.
Artists sought for coffee shop
