Now that we’ve turned clocks back an hour to end daylight-saving time, remember to check your home’s smoke detectors.
The National Fire Protection Association says 78 percent of all reported fires, more than 400,000 a year, happen in residences. The association recommends not only working smoke detectors but carbon monoxide detectors.

Not too late to adopt a dog
The Progressive Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) encourages folks to adopt dogs during Adopt-a-Dog Month in October.
It’s the tail end of the month, but there are plenty of dogs to choose from.
“If you’ve been thinking of getting a dog, now is the perfect time,” said PAWS Companion Animal Services Director Kay Joubert. “With more rescued dogs coming to Washington from the Gulf Coast region, adopting a dog from PAWS and other shelters will help free some space for the animals who may be arriving any day now.”

Trick or treat for donations
Kimberly Johnson said she thinks Halloween trick or treats should be a time for giving as well as receiving.
So, for the fifth straight year, she’s holding a food drive from 5:30 to 9 tonight at 4831 Dogwood Drive in Everett. Kids do get traditional treats, but she hopes trick-or-treaters also will bring nonperishable food items, such as canned food.
All donations go to the Volunteers of America food warehouse, which supplies food banks throughout the county. Last year, kids and families donated more than 600 pounds of food and more than $200 in donations.
