New I-405 ramp speeds commute
The redesigned I-405 on-ramp at NE 124th Street in Kirkland opened Friday.
The state Transportation Department said the westbound on-ramp from NE 124th Street onto northbound I-405 is one of the most congested ramps in Kirkland during the evening due to Snohomish County commuters heading home.
Drivers will no longer have to stop at a signal before turning right onto the freeway because construction engineers have moved the onramp nearly 200 feet to the east. What’s more, commuters will no longer have to wait in line with drivers who aren’t headed for the freeway because crews put in a barrier to separate freeway traffic from local traffic.
Ham radio buffs hone their skills
Ham radio operators in Snohomish County will drill from 1 to 5 p.m. today during a simulated emergency test.
In Western Washington, more than 1,300 amateur radio operators will make sure they are prepared to set up an emergency communications network in case of disaster.

Correction
KOMO-TV news anchorwoman Kathi Goertzen’s name was misspelled in a photo caption on Page B3 Friday. The photo was of Marysville resident Bonnie Krueger, who battled the same type of noncancerous brain tumor for which Goertzen is undergoing treatment.
