Policy wonk turns Willy Wonka

Gov. Christine Gregoire and her husband Mike Gregoire are inviting children to a Willy Wonka-themed gathering at their executive mansion on Halloween.

From 6 to 8 p.m., the governor’s mansion, decorated to look like Roald Dahl’s fictional chocolate factory, will be open to trick-or-treaters. Each child will receive a chocolate bar, and hidden in five of the bars will be a golden ticket. Golden ticket winners will get to visit the mansion on Dec. 2 with two guests for a sneak preview of the mansion’s holiday decorations.

The governor will dress up like Willy Wonka and her husband will portray the candy store owner from the original version of the movie “Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.”

Steps to prepare home for fire safety

October is Fire Safety Month. The American Red Cross offers safety tips:

* Talk to your kids about fires and the dangers of matches.

* Make sure your house number can be seen from the street.

* Avoid overloading electrical outlets or extension cords.

* Determine at least two ways to escape from every room of your home.

* Consider escape ladders for sleeping areas on the second and third floors. Learn how to use them and store them near the windows.

* Select a meeting location outside your home. Practice the plan.

* In the event of a fire, call 911 from a neighbor’s house.
