A group of Washington State University students enrolled in architecture, construction management, interior design and engineering programs, including Matt Kimball of Snohomish and Lindsay Mellum of Stanwood, are competing in the U.S. Department of Energy’s Solar Decathlon competition in Washington, D.C.
On the National Mall, the competition requires students to plan and build a 500- to 800-square-foot home that receives all its energy needs from the sun. Eighteen international teams are there. WSU is the only Northwest team.
The WSU students worked more than two years on the home that was shipped east. The event is called a decathlon because homes will be judged in 10 areas.
