Snohomish County PUD and JACO Environmental, a local appliance recycler, offers $35 to customers who give up their old refrigerators and freezers through the end of the year, until 3,700 units are recycled. JACO will pick up units when customers call for collection.
“We hope to decrease the number of inefficient refrigerators and freezers and, in doing so, reduce overall customer energy use,” said Bob Nicholas, PUD’s manager of product development. “Beyond the energy savings, we’re also ensuring that these units are recycled in an environmentally responsible manner and are not being returned to the used appliance market.”
To have a refrigerator or freezer picked up and recycled, it needs to be in working condition and 10 to 27 cubic feet in interior volume. Units also must be 1995 models or older. The program is for Snohomish County PUD customers only.
Customers must own the appliances being recycled, with a pickup limit of two per account. The $35 check will be mailed to the customer within four to six weeks after the appliance is collected.

The caption under a photo on Page B1 Saturday, accompanying a story about U.S. Navy forester Walter Briggs, misidentified the tree he was standing next to in an old-growth forest on Navy land near Arlington. The tree is a Western red cedar.
