Junior Girl Scout Troop 41000 is collecting items to be sent to school children and laborers in Iraq. The project will help these fourth-grade girls earn their Bronze Award.
They are working with Maj. Dave Kalamen of Everett, who is stationed in Iraq on his second tour of duty with the Army National Guard.
Kalamen has asked for the following:
Men’s boots and closed-toed shoes for laborers on the base
School supplies
Pencils (not mechanical)
Erasers (for the ends of pencils)
Small pencil sharpeners
Spiral notebooks
Small stuffed animals, Beanie Baby size.
Items may be new or gently used.
Deliver donations for the next two weeks to Silver Lake Video, 11014 19th Ave. SE in Everett.
Learn about orcas at Saturday event
A program called Killer Whale Tales is offered Saturday by the Northwest Stream Center in Everett.
It’s for first-graders and older.
Learn about Puget Sound’s orcas with Jeff Hogan. He will discuss how students can care for the world and its creatures.
The program begins at 10 a.m. Saturday at McCollum Park, 600 128th St. SE in Everett. It costs $5 for members and $7 for nonmembers.
Meeting planned on PUD rate hike
Snohomish County PUD customers will get a chance to have their say regarding a proposed electric rate increase at two public hearings Tuesday.
The 300,000- customer public utility is considering increasing its rates by an average of 3.5 percent starting in April. Residential rates would increase by 4.5 percent.
The PUD Board of Commissioners is scheduled to cast a final vote on the rate increase on Feb. 17.
The hearings are planned for 1:30 and 6:30 p.m. at Snohomish County PUD headquarters, 2320 California St., Everett.
Free fire safety seminar in Monroe
Monroe Fire District No. 3 plans to present a free fire safety seminar 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Monroe/Sky Valley Family YMCA, 14033 Fryelands Blvd.
The seminar includes a video that shows parents how to conduct a home fire drill. The seminar is for adults.
