Applications will be accepted until Aug. 1 for a free weeklong science and engineering camp for students entering seventh, eighth and ninth grades.
The second session of IDEAS (Increasing Diversity in Engineering And Science) will run from Aug. 21-25 at Everett Community College and Henry Cogswell College.
The camp, also sponsored by the YMCA of Snohomish County Minority Achievers Program, aims to introduce ethnic minorities and girls to science and engineering careers.
Students will be taught by college instructors, go on a marine biology field trip, build rockets and planes and do other educational activities.
The camp goes from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. with lunch and supplies provided. There are no math or science prerequisites.
To apply or for more information, contact Christina Castorena, EvCC associate dean for diversity, at 425-388-9282 or ccastorena@everettcc.edu.
The cost of ASB cards at Monroe High School will go up to $40 next year.
There had been no change in the price of the cards – which get students into activities and games for free or reduced prices – since 1992. In that time, enrollment has doubled.
The old price was $25. The school’s Associated Student Body leaders and the school board approved the change.
The Everett School District is changing how special education programs are overseen.
Instead of dividing director duties between elementary and secondary schools, the two directors will each oversee a geographic area of school buildings, mirroring how basic education programs are overseen.
Sara Wolverton will oversee schools in Area 1, which covers the north half of the district. Wolverton recently was hired to replace Claudia Menard, who retired.
Kim Durkin will oversee schools in Area 2, which covers the south half of the district.
Stanwood-Camano School District students will pay an extra 35 cents next year for school lunches.
Prices are going up to $2.50 at elementary schools and to $2.75 at middle and high schools.
Breakfast prices won’t change; they are $1.35 at all schools.
New faces and rotations have changed several principal seats in the Everett School District.
Janet Gillingham, previously at a middle school in Vancouver, Wash., took Colleen Welsh’s place at Garfield Elementary School.
Welsh headed to Lowell Elementary School, where Brenda Fuglevand stepped down for a district planning role.
Wayne Kettler will lead Woodside Elementary as Judy Blum-Anderson moves away.
Mary O’Brien, former assistant principal at Heatherwood Middle, is now at Silver Lake Elementary School. Ron Bellamy retired.
Kert Lenseigne switched from Madison to View Ridge Elementary, replacing Karen Koester, who also retired.
Mark Toland moved from Whittier to Madison. Replacing him is Carla Barton, who was principal at Terrace Park School in Mountlake Terrace, part of the Edmonds School District.
