The word from:
Marysville Alternative High
“Right now, we are having a coat and blanket drive. We just got done with our food drive. We brought in over a thousand cans of food. It was a community effort. Some of us will be going Christmas caroling at the (senior citizens’) home. My friend … and I want to play a John Lennon song.”

Arlington board honors academics
The Arlington High School girls’ volleyball team had more than digs and spikes on their minds this fall.
The Eagles had a combined 3.73 grade point average, ranking among the top statewide among Washington Interscholastic Activities Association schools.
The Arlington School Board recently honored the team and coach with a resolution “for leading by example the balancing of athletic and academic pursuits.”
Santa breakfast to aid ensemble
The Mountlake Terrace High School Music Boosters will host a “Breakfast with Santa” fund-raiser 8 a.m.-noon Saturday at the high school, 21801 44th Ave. W.
The event will include all-you-can-eat pancakes and drinks for $5 or $3 for students and senior citizens. Pictures with Santa will be available for a fee.
Mountlake Terrace High School and other local bands will provide entertainment. Proceeds will help Terrace’s Jazz Ensemble 1 and Wind Ensemble music groups.
Panel to discuss Granite Falls bond
An advisory committee will meet at 6:30 tonight to discuss when the Granite Falls School District should put a bond for a new high school on the ballot. The community involvement committee will meet at the high school library, 405 N. Alder Ave. It also will make suggestions on the scope of what a new high school should include.
Whittier holds book sale
Whittier Elementary School, 916 Oakes Ave. in Everett, has its winter book fair 5-7 p.m. Dec. 8. Proceeds from the public event will benefit the school’s library.
Edmonds-Woodway boosters seek help
The Edmonds-Woodway High School Booster Club has begun its first “giving campaign” to support students, teachers and staff at the school.
In the past, the booster club sponsored an auction as its primary source of funding. This year, at the suggestion of school supporters, it is trying a giving campaign through Dec. 31.
Booster club members say taxes don’t pay all the cost of running a high school. For example, the district paid for building a state-of-the-art science lab, for which the booster club helped buy new microscopes.
Contributions can be mailed to the EWHS Booster Club, 7600 212th St. SW, Edmonds, WA 98026-7556.
Turf: too much green
A new artificial turf field at Granite Falls High School would not pay for itself, according to a cost analysis.
Superintendent Joel Thaut had been asked to look into the possibility.
The cost would be about $1.5 million with annual maintenance around $30,000 to $50,000 and require specialized equipment. Rental fees would not cover the maintenance costs.
