A retirement complex in Lynnwood was evacuated Thursday morning as officials investigated a gas leak.
Firefighters determined the leak was caused by a stove-top burner where the flame had gone out, but the gas continued to flow overnight, Lynnwood fire spokeswoman Marybeth O’Leary said.
The two residents from that unit, a couple 89 and 83 years old, were transported to Stevens Hospital in Edmonds for observation, but did not seem to be suffering ill effects from the gas, she said.
A strong smell of natural gas was reported just before 9 a.m. in the 19400 block of 48th Avenue W.
Crews went door-to-door evacuating the residents until the leak was found. Lynnwood firefighters took about 20 people to the Lynnwood Library as Puget Sound Energy teams investigated.
Everyone was allowed to return at 10:45 a.m., O’Leary said.
Puget Sound Energy advises people to call 888-225-5773 to report the smell of natural gas in a building.
