SULTAN — Brandt Gerow has filed as a write-in candidate for Position 7 on the Sultan City Council.
Gerow, a member of the city’s planning commission, filed Tuesday with the Snohomish County Auditor’s Office as a write-in candidate. That means his name will not appear on the ballot, but votes for him will be tabulated by election officials.
Gerow said he decided to file because he doesn’t think either of the candidates running for the job best represent Sultan residents.
The current councilman in Position 7 is Mark Raney, who is seeking re-election. His opponent is Walter Hanna. Gerow said while Hanna’s name is on the ballot, he has not been campaigning and appears "to be just a figurehead."
Hanna did not return calls from The Herald on Tuesday.
Gerow said he feels he represents an independent voice in Sultan and is not a part of any political pact representing a select few. Raney is part of a coalition of candidates, to which Gerow referred.
That coalition includes Raney, Ron Kraut, Jeff Everett, Cindy Broughton and Russ Sumpter, all candidates for city council who have dedicated themselves to open government.
They claim some current council members are "skirting the law for their own and their friends’ financial gain," Raney stated in a recent press release.
Gerow said he pledges to look into the city’s financial situation and work to develop a fair and responsible budget for 2002 and beyond.
He also favors responsible growth.
He is a single father, business manager, a Washington native and a graduate of Sultan schools.
