Worm bins are an easy way to turn kitchen scraps into black gold for the garden.
You can pick up a discounted bin at Sorticulture this weekend, thanks to the City of Everett Public Works Dept. A stacking model costs $45. That’s a good deal. I’ve seen the same model offered in garden catalogs for $100 or more. At the booth you can also find instructions and people ready to answer your questions.
It’s not difficult. I purchased a worm bin from the city booth two years ago and a pound of worms from a vendor. I can’t say we’ve been the most attentive worm farmers, but we’ve still had success. My daughters dump in coffee grounds, vegetable matter and shredded newspapers when they remember. The worms have reproduced like crazy and produced buckets of worm castings – incredibly nutrient-rich compost for the garden.
Plus, the girls enjoy naming the worms.
Sorticulture, the annual garden arts festival, is set for noon to 8 p.m. Friday and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at Legion Memorial Park, 145 Alverson Blvd., Everett.
