EVERETT — Want to know why a sex offender can move into your neighborhood? Ever wonder what police do to check on offenders?
Tonight’s your chance to find out.
The Everett police, the state Department of Corrections and Providence Everett Sexual Assault Center will answer your questions about sex offenders 7-9 p.m. in the Garfield Elementary School cafeteria, 2215 Pine St.
"An educated community is a smarter community in terms of dealing with this issue," said Everett Sgt. Ken Thiessen. "The types of questions we receive show that the community doesn’t have a full understanding of how sex offenders are supervised" and other concerns.
Officers notify neighborhoods when an offender who’s considered highly likely to reoffend moves in, but those meetings have been drawing only a handful of people, Thiessen said.
Tonight’s forum, and one planned for the fall, gives the community another chance to learn more, Thiessen said.
You can find out where sex offenders live in Everett and throughout Snohomish County by visiting the Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office Web site at www.co.snohomish.wa.us/sheriff and click on sex offender search.
