SNOHOMISH – It was a bumpy sled ride for one Snohomish girl Tuesday.
The 6-year-old girl bumped her head on the undercarriage of a Chevy Tahoe after sledding underneath the moving vehicle, Snohomish County sheriff’s Sgt. Ty Trenary said.
Remarkably, the girl was not seriously hurt, Trenary said.
The girl was sledding in the 7600 block of 140th Place SE just before 1 p.m. when she reportedly shot out into the road.
A Chevy Tahoe was traveling down the road at the same time. A fence prevented the driver from seeing the girl, Trenary said.
The girl slid beneath the high-riding vehicle and hit her head.
“She’s very fortunate. Had it been a second or two earlier or later, she would have been hit,” Trenary said.
A 12-year-old girl also escaped serious injury Tuesday after she hit a tree while sledding in a park near the 13700 block of 65th Place W., Fire District 1 spokeswoman Leslie Hynes said.
Tuesday’s mishaps should be a reminder to parents that children should be cautious when sledding, Trenary said.
“We understand kids are home from school, but we really don’t want them sledding in the streets or anywhere where there might be traffic,” Trenary said.
He also advised parents to be aware of tree branches weighed down by snow and ice. Dozens of trees have fallen during the storm.
Parents should look for potential hazards when allowing children to play outside, he said.
