MARYSVILLE — A new pageant is coming to town.
A preliminary round of the All American Girl pageant is scheduled to take place in Marysville on Feb. 27.
The winners head to the state pageant in Seattle on April 23-25 and a national contest in Portland, Ore., on Aug. 12-16.
This is the first year for the pageant, said Monica Berginc of Marysville, who helped bring the event to town.
It’s not called a beauty pageant because the focus is on poise, personality and public speaking in addition to “natural beauty,” Berginc said.
“It’s not just about the looks, it’s about the whole package,” she said.
Girls and women from the youngest babies to age 21 are eligible in eight age categories. Makeup is prohibited for girls under 13. A talent component is optional.
Berginc, a stay-at-home mom and self-described hobby photographer, got involved by doing some head shots for pageant moms in preliminary rounds last year.
“I was hooked,” she said.
Her daughter, Megan, 7, competed and won her age category in a preliminary round in Sumner in November, Berginc said. Megan won’t compete in Marysville because her mom is an organizer, but will compete in the state pageant in Seattle, she said.
About 20 to 25 girls and women are expected to compete in the event next month.
