Former U.S. Sen. Slade Gorton and Bill Gates Sr. will square off on Initiative 1098 in two Puget Sound locations in the coming week.
Gates Sr. is the public face of the Yes on 1098 campaign. He helped fund the signature-gathering to get it on the ballot and has been in three television commercials so far. Gorton, a Republican who served nearly two decades in the Senate, is one of the more high profile voices of opposition.
Thursday night the two men will debate in front of an audience in the Black Box Theatre at Edmonds Community College, 20000 68th Ave. West, Lynnwood.
Joining Gates will be Marilyn Watkins, Policy Director at the Economic Opportunity Institute while Gorton will be teamed with Paul Guppy, Vice President of Research at the Washington Policy Center.
The 7 p.m. event is free and will be taped for later broadcast on cable stations in south and east Snohomish County and north King County.
Next Monday, Gorton and Gates Sr. will be at it again at the University of Washington campus in Tacoma.
Billed as the “Great State Income Tax Debate,” the debate gets under way at 6 p.m. at Philip Hall.
Space is limited and tickets are required for the UW Tacoma debate.
