SEATTLE — Gov. Chris Gregoire has chosen a tunnel as the best option to replace the Alaskan Way Viaduct on the Seattle waterfront. Meanwhile a group opposing the tunnel has filed an initiative with the city.
In a statement released at the Tuesday morning announcement she says, “Building a deep-bored tunnel will support a strong economy today and in the future.”
The two-mile, four-lane tunnel on two levels, seen in artist renderings, would run between the Qwest and Safeco Field stadiums on the south to near Seattle Center on the north.
The group calling itself, “Yes Viaduct!”, has 180 days to gather 18,000 signatures to put their proposal opposing the tunnel before the City Council.
The council can enact the construction ban into law, send it for a vote of the people or put two options on the ballot.
The initiative filed Tuesday would block any construction on city property of the viaduct.
