Another city in Snohomish County is exploring the idea of merging its police department into the Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office.
Granite Falls City Council members voted on Nov. 30 to authorize Mayor Haroon Saleem to discuss a possible police services contract.
The city is considering the contract to help balance the 2012 budget.
A budget ordinance is scheduled to be adopted at the Dec. 14 council meeting. It’s not clear how quickly city officials might make a decision about the future of policing in Granite Falls.
After months of debate, the city of Snohomish made a final vote in November to contract for police service from the sheriff’s office.
In the fall, Mill Creek kicked around the idea for a couple of weeks but ultimately ditched it.
The sheriff’s office has police services contracts or partnerships in communities including Sultan, Gold Bar, Stanwood, Index and Darrington.
