LYNNWOOD — Two unfinished portions of the Interurban Trail here could be completed by mid-2013 if the city gets the $1 million state grant it’s seeking.
The 24-mile long paved trail is used by bicyclists and pedestrians. It stretches from Everett to north Seattle as it wends through Lynnwood, Edmonds, Mountlake Terrace and Shoreline.
City officials want a share of the $20 million in 2010 Enhancements Funding Program grants the Puget Sound Regional Council is making available to Snohomish, King, Pierce and Kitsap counties.
The money is set aside for nonmotorized transportation related projects, Lynnwood project manager David Mach said.
“If you ride the Burke-Gilman Trail or the Centennial Trail, they’re continuous,” he said. “That’s the plan for the Interurban Trail as well, that it would be one continuous ride.”
So far, the city’s received $615,000 in federal grants to help it complete the last two Interurban Trail gaps in Lynnwood’s south end neighborhoods. Those incomplete sections are from 52nd Avenue W. to 208th Street SW and from South Lynnwood Park to 212th Street SW.
Grants would pay for all trail improvements while the city pitches in about $400,000 for utility upgrades in the $2 million project, Mach said. In mid-August, Lynnwood will open a new overpass near I-5 that will allow cyclists and pedestrians to cross 44th Avenue S. away from traffic.
