Send another log into the rumor mill – it appears neo-punk band Green Day is headed for Everett.
Green Day’s Web site, along with the concert site Pollstar.com, say the band will play at the Everett Events Center Nov. 16, along with New Found Glory and Sugarcult.
But as with legendary singer Bette Midler, who announced she’s playing in Everett on Dec. 7, Everett Events Center officials will not yet confirm the concert date.
“It’s another one of those rumors,” said Fred Safstrom, executive director of the event center’s public facilities district. “We’ll be looking forward to announcing it,” he said, but not yet.
For many in their 20s, Green Day is to high school as bare midriffs are to young superstars of today including Britney Spears and Paris Hilton.
After minor success in the early 1990s, Green Day dive-bombed the post-Nirvana alternative music scene with their first album on a major label, 1994’s “Dookie.” With radio hits including “Longview,” “Basket Case” and “When I Come Around,” the album sold 10 million copies internationally and won Green Day the 1994 Grammy for Best Alternative Music Performance.
The band never matched its initial success, but other hits trickled in, including “Closing Time” and the much-played “Good Riddance (Time of Your Life).” The band will be promoting its new album, “American Idiot,” on the tour.
The concert would be another recent big-name draw – such as The Cure – for the arena as it approaches its one-year anniversary.
In addition to apparently landing Green Day, the events center set an attendance record with the weekend’s Ringling Bros. and Barnum &Bailey circus. The four-day, eight-show event drew 40,970 people, up from the previous multi-day show record of 36,388. Events center officials were thrilled by the area’s response to the circus.
“I think it was a surprise to everybody,” Safstrom said. “But I talked to a lot of people who had gone to the circus years ago, had fond memories of that and looked forward to going again.”
