OLYMPIA, Wash. — Gov. Chris Gregoire has directed the state Department of Health to convene a panel of scientific experts to recommend how best to monitor aggressive antibiotic-resistant infections, and what to do about it.
The letter from Gregoire was received by health officials Wednesday, and asks for recommendations on all antibiotic-resistant organisms, including methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, or MRSA. It asks that a report is given to her no later than Jan. 10.
Gregoire also wants the health department to request all Washington state laboratories to immediately report serious cases of MRSA. She also wants state health officials to work with local health agencies and health care providers to do more to educate the public about MRSA.
