OLYMPIA -The leaping salmon design is Gov. Chris Gregoires choice for the Washington quarter coin.
Gregoire announced her choice Thursday at Centennial Elementary School in Olympia.
The winning design shows a leaping salmon with Mount Rainier in the background and the slogan “The Evergreen State.” It was the top choice in an online poll conducted by the State Quarter Advisory Commission, which was led by Gregoires husband, Mike. The design had 45 percent of the vote.
About 40 percent favored an outline of the state around images of apples, Mount Rainier and a salmon. The third choice was an Indian-style drawing of a killer whale.
The new quarter will be the 42nd in a series commemorating the states. It is scheduled for release in 2007.
