OLYMPIA – The Legislature is not coming back to work anytime soon.
“Gov. Chris Gregoire will not be calling a special session,” Karina Shagren of the governor’s communication staff, said this morning.
The announcement followed a morning conference call Gregoire held with House Speaker Frank Chopp, D-Seattle, and Senate Majority Leader Lisa Brown.
A session had been expected because the Legislature adjourned April 26 without acting on a couple budget-related bills.
Gregoire had said she would not summon legislators back for an extra session unless the two legislative leaders reached an agreement on exactly what bills would be considered.
She said repeatedly she did not want the session to last more than a day or two, though state law allows them to meet for up to one month.
In a joint statment, Chopp and Brown said, “The few issues left on the table in the education and corrections budgets can be taken up when the Legislature next convenes, and after future revenue forecasting provides a clearer picture of the lasting effect of the recession on our state.”
