MARYSVILLE — A group calling itself Citizens to Save Marysville Getchell Sports plans to attend the Marysville School Board meeting Monday night to protest the district’s change in plans for bringing varsity sports to the high school.
The meeting is set for 6:30 p.m. Monday in the board room
at the school district administration building, 4220 80th St. NE.
A group of parents concerned about the lack of varsity sports or even C-team sports at Marysville Getchell High School also is scheduled to meet with school Superintendent Larry Nyland, staff and school board members at 6 p.m. Wednesday, also in the board room.
Nyland said his cash-strapped school district has had to make tough choices on what to fund for the coming school year.
A parents group, Citizens to Save Marysville Getchell Sports, wants to find a way to come up with the money to fund varsity sports at their school, according to a letter from the group to the school district.
Currently, boys and girls from Marysville Getchell take a bus to Marysville-Pilchuck High School to turn out for varsity sports. An earlier plan called for the start of varsity sports at Marysville Getchell next school year.
After budget meetings in December and January, the Marysville School Board voted on Jan. 10 to postpone the start of varsity sports at the new high school until the 2012-13 school year, Nyland said.
