Gusting winds knock out power to 5,000 homes

Gusty winds knocked out power to about 5,000 Snohomish County PUD customers on Thursday night.

Also, a tree crashed through the roof of a Mountlake Terrace home.

The gusts hit in two waves — the first about 6:45 p.m. and the second about 8 p.m., PUD spokesman Neil Neroutsos said.

By late evening, power had been restored to all but about 1,000 customers, mostly in the Picnic Point area, he said. Most areas were back in service within an hour.

"We had some pretty gusty winds," he said, adding that the problems occurred in the Woodinville, Maltby, Edmonds-Mukilteo and west Monroe areas.

Winds reportedly were at 20 mph, with gusts to 38 mph in Snohomish County.

Neroutsos urged residents to call the PUD rather than 911 unless the outage is life-threatening. The PUD’s main line is 425-783-1000.

In Mountlake Terrace, no one was inside the house in the 21800 block of 58th Avenue W. when an 80-foot tree came down at about 5:45 p.m.

"The tree went through the roof and into the living room of the home," said Leslie Hynes, public information officer for Snohomish County Fire District 1.

Fire crews put tarps over the roof to keep the rain out as the homeowner awaited the arrival of a repair crew.

Marysville

Mobile home flooded: Sara Kern of Marysville reported about 10 p.m. Thursday that her mobile home was flooded when culverts in the area were blocked by garbage and heavy rains led to backups.

"We came home to a river running out of our kids’ bedroom," she said.

Her family of seven spent much of the day moving furniture out on the deck. Some items were ruined, but she said the family rented a pump to prevent worse flood damage.

Other homeowners in the area also were flooded, Kern said.

Arlington

Mobile home fire: A fire damaged a mobile home and displaced a family living in the residence.

The fire broke out about 6 p.m. Wednesday in the 16200 block of McElroy Road, Arlington Fire Chief Mike Ganz said Thursday.

A resident arrived home to find smoke coming out a door. Firefighters were able to confine the fire to the kitchen and living room areas, Ganz said.

"If it had gone two or three minutes longer, the fire would have damaged the entire structure," he said.

Damage is estimated at $30,000.

The Snohomish County chapter of the American Red Cross assisted the family with housing, food and other needs.

Oak Harbor

Two injured in accident: Two Oak Harbor teenagers were injured in a rollover accident Thursday evening, according to the Washington State Patrol.

Dustin Blevins, 19, and Samantha Gilmore, 15, both of Oak Harbor, were hurt when their vehicle reportedly crossed the centerline and went down an embankment.

Blevins was transported to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle by aid car. Gilmore was treated at the scene.

Their 1993 Ford Taurus was a total loss. The accident occurred at Golf Course Road and Rocky Point Road, northwest of Oak Harbor.
