LAKE STEVENS — The Lamb of God Lutheran Church congregation is getting ready to welcome a visitor from Haiti.
Pastor Daniel Paul from Ouanaminthe, Haiti, is scheduled to speak at 3 p.m. Sunday at the Zion Lutheran School gym, 3923 103rd Ave. SE. The pastor worked with members of the church to build a school and a girls orphanage in the northeastern area of the country.
Lamb of God Lutheran Church in 2003 began to support Paul’s efforts. Faith Lutheran Church in La Grande, Ore., joined in the partnership in 2005 and the organization Nord Est Haiti Lutheran Mission was formed. The two congregations offer their support by getting sponsors for children and sending mission teams to the area, among other things.
Susie Rahn, a member of the Lake Stevens church, is on the board of directors for the Nord Est Haiti Lutheran Mission. She has visited Ouanaminthe twice. Rahn’s 17-year-old son, Jared, and her husband, Dale, went with her in March on a five-day trip. Her husband is an optometrist and performed eye exams while they were in Ouanaminthe, Rahn said.
“Every time, we learn more about what they need and what we can do and Dale learned about what kind of glasses to bring next time,” she said.
Paul is expected to speak about the ministry during his visit. An orphanage for boys is planned to open in the summer, Rahn added.
“(Paul) comes back every year to every two years and gives us an update,” she said. “It’s a very grassroots organization.”
Anyone is welcome to hear Paul speak Sunday at Zion Lutheran School, Rahn added. Haitian artwork will be for sale and dessert and beverages will be available. To learn about the mission go to www.nehlm.org.
