RICHLAND — A whistleblower on the Hanford Nuclear Reservation has reached a settlement with the contractor who operates the site’s nuclear waste tank farms.
Terms of the settlement between Shelly Doss, a former environmental specialist at the tank farms, and contractor Washington River Protection Solutions were not released.
The Tri-City Herald reports that last year, federal labor officials issued a preliminary order requiring the contractor to rehire Doss and pay her more than $220,000. They found the contractor violated federal whistleblower protections when it fired Doss in 2011 after she raised issues of nuclear and environmental safety.
Hanford is located near Richland, Washington, and is engaged in cleaning up the nation’s largest amount of nuclear waste. The waste is left over from the production of plutonium for nuclear weapons.
