For “Muppet Show” fans, it may come as no surprise that Beaker ended up in hot water.
On the television show, Beaker, the mumbling lab assistant with the big orange nose, often was the butt of jokes. He’s the one who held exploding chemistry experiments and was shot out of cannons.
Now, FBI agents have dubbed a similarly large-nosed man — a suspect in at least eight recent bank robberies — the “Beaker Bandit” and they hope to land their Beaker in the can.
“If we don’t stop him, we’re going to have a ninth victim and a 10th victim and that’s really why we want to stop him,” said FBI Special Agent Larry Carr.
Since Oct. 17, a man has robbed eight Puget Sound-area banks, including two in Snohomish County, Carr said. On Wednesday, a man hit the U.S. Bank in the 15000 block of NE 24th Street in Redmond, he said. The same man is suspected of robbing the WaMu in the 12900 block of the Bothell-Everett Highway in Everett on Nov. 28. On Dec. 11, agents believe he held up the Verity Credit Union in the 18500 block of 33rd Avenue W. in Lynnwood.
He’s also believed to have hit banks, mostly branches in grocery stores, in Bothell and Kirkland, Carr said.
Most likely, he’s a homeless drug user taking the bus to the banks he’s robbing, Carr said.
While the FBI won’t say how much money he’s taking in his heists, they will say it’s not much.
“He’s not going to retire,” Carr said.
In each of the cases, the man has worn a hooded sweatshirt and blue-and-white beanie to the heist. He’s described as being in his 20s, 5 feet, 8 inches tall and about 150 pounds.
At the bank, he’s handed the teller a note demanding money, Carr said.
“He’s a menace. Whether he shows a weapon or a note, we presume he’s armed,” Carr said.
Now, agents hope some publicity will help bring in tips that will lead to the suspect’s arrest.
They’ve chosen the “Beaker Bandit” nickname for the suspect based on the man’s large proboscis, Carr said.
“If that’s the most prominent feature, that’s going to spark something in someone’s mind,” he said.
The suspect’s big nose is what got agents to thinking about the Dr. Bunsen Honeydew’s guinea pig sidekick from “The Muppet Show.”
And if the man’s nose doesn’t give him away, other people’s noses might help nab him, Carr said.
Many of the bank tellers told FBI agents the man who robbed them had a bad hygiene problem.
So he may easily have ended up as the B.O. Bandit.
