MILL CREEK — While out doorbelling for votes, first-time political candidate Brent Samodurov was ready to leave one doorstep when he heard a woman shout from inside.
"At first I thought she was yelling at me to leave, you know, that ‘We don’t want any’ that you get sometimes," Samodurov said. "But I had a weird gut reaction, so I knocked again, which I don’t normally do, and then I heard clearly, ‘Help me, help me.’ "
Samodurov, a Mill Creek Republican who’s running for the Legislature in the 44th District, said he’d been to about 60 homes when he knocked on a door in the Mill Creek area just past 6 p.m. Monday and heard someone cry out from inside.
He ran to the back of the house and was able to get in through an unlocked door to find an elderly woman lying on the floor.
The widow had apparently suffered severe muscle problems in her back and had been struggling to crawl from the bedroom to the front door since 3 a.m., he said. She hadn’t had food or water since the night before.
Samodurov, 27, called paramedics and waited with the woman until they arrived and her son was on the way.
The woman, who was listed as 84 years old on the dispatch report, was unavailable for comment Wednesday.
It’s the most adventure Samodurov has had since he started campaigning a week ago, he said.
"Everybody’s got two dogs, I found that out, but other than that, there’s been nothing like this," Samodurov said. "But I’ve got another 25,000 houses to go, so we’ll see what happens."
