Hard-hitting snowstorms have slammed much of the western part of the state, but it looks like Snohomish County could escape mostly unscathed, according to meteorologists.
On New Year’s Day it was southeast Washington and all of Oregon that got hit by a massive snowstorm.
Chains were required on the entire length of I-5 through Oregon earlier in the day.
Today and tonight the northwest corner of Washington should get hammered by another big storm.
"You don’t have anything to worry about," said Jay Naher, a National Weather Service meteorologist intern, saying that the Everett area could see a smattering of snow showers today and tonight. "It appears you’re avoiding most of the heavy stuff."
That’s not the case in Bellingham, where heavy snow is expected to fall today and tonight. Oregon and the southeast corner of Washington were expected to still be digging out from heavy — in some cases, record level — snowfall today along the entire I-5 corridor and farther east.
Whether you’re just going to work or driving home after a long holiday visit, Washington State Patrol Trooper Lance Ramsay warns travelers to be careful on the region’s wet, possibly icy roads.
"We’re getting a ton of accidents up on Steven’s Pass," Ramsay said Thursday. "People are going way too fast."
The key is to keep space around you when you’re driving in tough conditions, he said.
"You have got to slow down, you have got to be more aware of what’s going on around you," he said. "Watch in front, watch behind and be prepared to take evasive action."
