The Daily Herald’s breaking news coverage of the first days of last year’s deadly Oso mudslide was named a finalist in the 2014 Scripps Howard Awards.
Top honors went to the staff of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch for their coverage of the fatal shooting of an African-American teenager by a Ferguson, Missouri, police officer.
Sharing the distinction with The Herald as a finalist was CBS Evening News, for newsman Scott Pelley’s live reporting from Cuba after the U.S. normalized relations.

Established in 1953, the Scripps Howard Foundation’s national journalism awards honors the best work in the news industry and journalism education. $180,000 in prize money was awarded.
Winners were also announced Tuesday in the contest’s other reporting categories, which include investigative, public service, distinguished service to the First Amendment, and business and economics. A full list of winners can be found on the Scripps Howard Awards website at www.shawards.org.
One other Washington news organization, The Pacific Northwest Inlander, in Spokane, was honored as a finalist in the Community Journalism category for a series that exposed a regional crisis in mental health treatment that has led to death and unnecessary confinement.
