Local efforts under way to aid and support disaster relief:
President Bush has indicated flags should remain at half-staff until sunset Sunday. Return flags to full-staff Monday morning.
Americans Show Unity Against Terrorism: A grass-roots movement is inviting everyone to come together tonight at 7 p.m., to step out your door, stop your car, or step out of your establishment and light a candle. The goal is to show the world that Americans are strong and united together against terrorism.
Progressive Animal Welfare Society in Lynnwood adjusted its planned Bark in the Park and PAWSwalk activities to offer a memorial dog walk at 11 a.m. Saturday at Gas Works Park in Seattle to honor victims of terrorist attacks. Bring pet food and supplies for New York animal shelters, which are expected to be swamped, or donate to the American Red Cross.
Sno-Isle Natural Foods Co-op is collecting for the American Red Cross at 2530 Lombard Ave. in Everett. They ask shoppers to donate member discounts through Sunday, to be matched by the co-op.
Students at Cedar Wood Elementary School in Mill Creek wrote poems in the wake of Tuesday’s tragic events. They will present their work to local firefighters today.
Evergreen Funeral Home &Cemetery at 4504 Broadway in Everett set up a memorial book for folks to sign and express their regrets. Signatures will be collected until noon Oct. 11. After that, the book will be sent to one of their associated funeral homes in the New York area for delivery to the mayor.
Lakewood High School leadership students are coordinating a blue-ribbon campaign to wear or place on car antennas to show support.
Highland Skating Club offers a car wash from 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at All Care Pet Hospital, 11126 Mukilteo Speedway, to benefit the disaster relief fund.
Everett Eagles Junior Drill Team members will wash cars from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday at the North Everett Safeway, 1715 Broadway. Proceeds will benefit the American Red Cross, rather than new uniforms for the team. Intermec Technologies offers a car wash to benefit the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday in the same parking lot.
An annual block party, "Patriotic Pig Roast," to bring the community together for healing and to support donations to the American Red Cross, is planned for 5 p.m. Saturday at 17916 25th Ave. NE in Arlington. Wear red, white and blue.
Exchange Club of Snohomish will hand out American flags from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 30 at the Snohomish Chamber of Commerce Classic Car Display at the corner of Avenue A and First Street, and will collect donations for the Red Cross.
A blood drive is planned from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday at North County Bank, 5200 172nd St. NE in Smokey Point.
An American Red Cross donation site is available at the Alderwood Mall customer service center near Weisfield Jewelers in Lynnwood and at Lowes in Smokey Point.
Stadium Flowers stores in Lynnwood and Everett are giving away small plastic American flags while supplies last.
The city of Bothell will have a moment of silence and ringing of the bell honoring the attack victims today at 12:30 p.m. at the Park at Bothell Landing, 9919 NE 180th St.
Thanks to an overwhelming turnout of donors in the two days following the terrorist attacks, the Puget Sound Blood Center’s supply is at capacity. So the center will not be accepting blood donations Saturday or Sunday at any of its nine permanent sites. However, sites will be open Saturday 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. to register for donations in October and November, when the supply will need to be replenished.
A Washington State Republican Party "Harvest Dinner" is planned for 6 p.m. Saturday at WestCoast Grand Hotel at the Park, 303 W. North River Drive in Spokane. Tickets are $50 for dinner or $150 per person or $250 per couple for the private reception and dinner. Profits benefit the American Red Cross. For more information, call 206-575-2900.
