PORTLAND, Ore. — A federal judge has sentenced a Mexican man to 12 years in prison for his role in the distribution of heroin that killed a Milwaukie, Ore., man.
Prosecutors said Wednesday that 24-year-old Charly Aguayo-Caro managed day-to-day operations for a distribution business in Portland. He accepted telephone orders and employed couriers to deliver the heroin.
Police arrested him after the 2012 overdose death of 23-year-old Michael Rael.
Rael had recently moved to Oregon from New Mexico and was found dead in the driver’s seat of his vehicle. Investigators used his text messages to trace the heroin he ingested to the drug organization.
Aguayo-Caro pleaded guilty to conspiracy to distribute heroin.
U.S. Attorney Amanda Marshall says 147 Oregonians died from heroin overdoses in 2012.
