White and yellow road markings never seemed so important.
By just rearranging the lines on the Hewitt Avenue Trestle, state transportation officials believe they can cut the average travel time by 40 percent, taking three minutes off the eastbound afternoon rush hour commute.
The state Department of Transportation plans to reconfigure striping on through and exit lanes at the Cavalero interchange at the trestle’s east end. Work will begin in coming weeks as weather allows. The department hopes to provide an interim solution for improving an at times horrendous traffic problem on U.S. 2 across Ebey Island.
