INDEX – A hiker who suffered chest injuries from a rockslide at Keyes Peak was rescued Wednesday.
The man, an experienced hiker in his 60s, and another hiker were on the south side of Keyes Peak when the rockslide hit Tuesday, Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Jan Jorgensen said. A rock hit the man in the chest, she said.
The other hiker went for help Wednesday morning, and firefighters from Gold Bar, Monroe and Index hiked up to the injured man, Jorgensen said.
A sheriff’s helicopter picked up the man at Virgin Lake and took him to the Monroe airport. He was taken to Valley General Hospital in Monroe, where he is expected to recover, Jorgensen said.
Everett: FBI to join police investigation
The FBI will join Everett police and the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives in investigating an arson that destroyed a Pakistani-owned market Friday.
FBI spokeswoman Melissa Schuler said Wednesday she did not know if the agency was investigating the incident as a possible hate crime.
Everett police have not determined a motive for the arson, which gutted the Continental Spices market, 315 E. Casino Road. White crosses and the message “F U Arab” were found spray-painted inside the store.
“We have clues we’re working with, and the detectives are pursuing their leads,” Everett police Sgt. Boyd Bryant said. “We are not satisfied that this is a hate crime.”
Police patrol will target unsafe drivers
Everett police will conduct another summer safety patrol Friday, targeting those who drive aggressively, block intersections, run red lights and don’t wear seat belts. Police will be working in uniform and undercover.
“We’re going to be out working in areas where there’s been collisions or complaints,” Everett Sgt. Dan Templeman said Wednesday.
The stings are funded by a state Traffic Safety Commission grant.
Mountlake Terrace: Six escape home fire
A man and five children escaped safely from a burning home in the 21300 block of 60th Avenue W. Wednesday, firefighters said.
A neighbor alerted them to the fire, which was reported about 4 p.m., Snohomish County Fire District 1 spokeswoman Leslie Hynes said.
When firefighters arrived, there were flames and heavy smoke billowing out the back of the house, Hynes said.
The fire caused heavy damage to the home, primarily near the garage, she said. The cause is still under investigation.
Montana: Granite Falls woman sentenced
A woman from Granite Falls who appealed a 40-year loss of her driving privileges after a crash that killed four members of a Seeley Lake family was sentenced Wednesday to five years in prison, the Associated Press reported.
District Judge John Larson said the prison sentence he issued to Michelle Herd was necessary after hearing from the surviving family members of those killed in the December 2000 crash.
Herd was hurrying from Seattle to Great Falls, Mont., on the day of the crash after her father told her that her mother was dying. She had been driving on two hours of sleep when she passed a car on two-lane Highway 200 and continued in the wrong lane for 15 miles, believing she was still on the interstate.
Her Dodge truck collided head-on with a Volkswagen Beetle, killing Stacy Good, 53, and three of her children – Kitty, 22; Arundel, 18; and Tully, 13. The car’s front gas tank burst into flames and all four victims died at the scene.
