SHELTON — A hiker says he was spooked by a run-in with an aggressive mountain goat on Washington’s Olympic Peninsula near Lake Cushman. Jim Decker was hiking on the Mount Rose Trail in Mason County on Tuesday evening. He’d been hiking with his wife but they became separated.
His wife tells KOMO-TV the goat stalked and charged her husband for more than a mile on the trail.
When he reached a clearing, Decker tells the TV station he took his pack off and pulled out a knife, ready for a showdown if necessary. But he says other hikers showed up and the goat ran off.
Decker says he remembered that a man was fatally gored by a mountain goat in Olympic National Park last year. That goat was later killed by rangers.
KOMO says the Forest Service told the couple it would post warning signs.
