Hikers and river rafters should be prepared before heading into the backcountry or floating down a river, Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office officials say.
Here are some safety tips from the sheriff’s office:
Plan your trip and leave a detained description of the destination, route to and from, and time of return with a close friend or family member. Do not deviate from the plan.
?Do not go into the mountains alone.
Plan for possible emergencies. Carry the 10 essentials: map, compass, flashlight, extra food and water, extra clothing, sunglasses, first-aid kit, pocket knife, waterproof matches, and candle or firestarter.
Have a knowledge of the area. Check weather conditions and be aware that conditions can change rapidly.
Know your limitations. Be physically and mentally prepared.
If lost or separated from your companions, establish a safe location and stay put until help arrives.
Plan ahead and know the river before you go.
Always use proper equipment, including an approved lifejacket.
Never use alcohol or drugs while rafting or doing any other water sport.
Always let a friend or family member know where you will start on the river and where you plan to get out. Don’t change that plan.
Children and those who can’t swim should not go into the river.
